Anatomy |
| |
Anatomy is a dynamic science, which is fundamental
to clinical practice. It is of paramount
importance to have clear knowledge of the
structure of the normal human body and the
possible variations from the developmental
point of view. At the undergraduate level, the
department is occupied in teaching MBBS, BDS
and BSc Nursing students in addition to postgraduate
students of pre-clinical, para-clinical
and clinical subjects. The department has its
own postgraduate (MSc) and PhD programmes.
The department facilitates cadaveric dissection
exercises for surgical skills development of
various clinical procedures for departments
like ENT, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Plastic
Surgery, etc.
MSc MEDICAL ANATOMY
The MSc Programme in Anatomy involves a
foundation course in the first year where the
students will be familiarized with the human
anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. There
are didactic lectures as well as regular practical
and demonstration classes. The second year is
devoted to medical anatomy theory and practicals.
Apart from lecture classes, there are group
discussions, seminars, journal clubs, etc. with an
introduction to bio-statistics and research methodology.
Most of the time is devoted to hands-on
training in dissection, histology and other practical
classes. The third year is used for dissertation
work as well as for advanced theoretical and
technical studies. The students are encouraged
to take up a research project and take it to completion
over a 3 year period.
Job opportunities: Qualified medical anatomists
can take up teaching jobs in medical colleges. |

Biochemistry |
| |
Biochemistry is the language of life, the science
concerned with the chemical constituents of
living cells. Biochemistry encompasses the study
of cell biology, molecular biology, and molecular
genetics. The aim of biochemistry is to explain,
in molecular terms, all the chemical processes of
living cells. Biochemistry has become an essential
subject in medical science for understanding the
concept of mechanisms for the maintenance of
normal health. The department conducts an MSc Medical Biochemistry course as well as PhD
programmes. The faculty members are involved
in many research projects funded by external
agencies.
MSc MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY
The tools for research in all branches of medical
science are mainly biochemical in nature. The
study of biochemistry is essential in understanding
the basic functions of the body. This study
will give information regarding the functioning
of cells at the molecular level.
The first year is the foundation course, where
the students are familiarized with the human
anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. There
are didactic lectures, training in laboratory techniques,
and demonstration classes. The second
year is devoted to biochemistry theory and practicals.
Apart from lecture classes, there are group
discussions, seminars, journal clubs. etc., with an
introduction to bio-statistics and research methodology.
Most of the time is devoted to handson
training in practical classes, starting with the
basic biochemical techniques and ending in
advanced techniques in molecular biology. The
third year is used for dissertation work as well as
for advanced theoretical and technical studies.
The students are also exposed to our high tech
biochemistry diagnostic laboratories.
Job opportunities: Qualified medical biochemists
can go on to teaching jobs in medical colleges
as well as other science colleges. The clinical
laboratories are always looking for medical
biochemists. There are ample opportunities
to take a career in the direction of research in
basic sciences or in pharmaceutical industries. |

Physiology |
| |
Physiology is a basic medical science which
deals with functions of the human body.
The Department of Physiology includes four
well-equipped laboratories for undergraduate
teaching and for PG students. The haematology laboratory consists of modern binocular
and monocular compound microscopes. The
large extension Kymograph and its accessories
are a special feature of the mammalian lab. It
also has a Dales Bath for recording intestinal
movements. The clinical laboratory possesses a
number of excellent static and working models
of human systems including a unique seven
feet tall wooden model of the human nervous
system. The research laboratory is also provided
with four single channel physiographs and
two multi-channel polygraphs to record biological
activities. Moreover, the departmental
library has an excellent collection of the latest
textbooks in physiology and allied subjects.
The regular journal club and review article
presentations for faculty help to update recent
advances on the subject.
MSc MEDICAL PHYSIOLOGY
The first year is the foundation course (human
anatomy, physiology and biochemistry). At the
end of first year there will be a university examination.
The students who have satisfactorily
completed the foundation course will undergo
a further course of four semesters in physiology.
During this period, there is intensive training in
the subject through lectures, tutorial classes,
discussions, seminars, journal clubs and practical,
etc. with an introduction to bio-statistics
and research methodology. Students have to
work on a particular allotted research topic for
a dissertation.
Job Opportunities: With the coming up of
medical, dental and nursing colleges in the self
financing sector, there is acute dearth of qualified
faculty. The outgoing students, therefore,
will have sufficient openings in various medical,
dental, nursing and science colleges. There are
also ample opportunities for research work. |
