Allied Health Sciences
(Physician assistant)
Physician Assistant is a position between the doctor and the nurse. They will work under the supervision of a doctor. They are responsible for providing diagnostic and therapeutic services, to obtain patient history, perform physical examination etc. Only those who are willing to dedicate themselves for patient care which calls for hard and strenuous work should opt for this course. The course is entirely hospital based.
Eligibility:

First class in B.Sc. Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology , Zoology.

Job opportunity: This is a job-oriented technical training course. Those who successfully complete the course may be absorbed in AIMS itself. There are very good opportunities in all leading hospitals in India.
 
Diabetes Sciences This course is intended to train those who would assist doctors in their clinic to counsel patients about diet, initiate insulin therapy, provide psychological support, etc., on an individual basis and also conducting group education sessions on diabetes to patients and their relatives. In addition, this course is designed to cover the theoretical and practical aspects of research methodology so that the candidate will be additionally equipped to assist doctors with research projects over and above their capabilities to provide individual and group education on diabetes to patients. They will also be exposed to databases in diabetes and diabetes epidemiology. Candidates undergoing this course must participate in a clinical trail related to diabetes.
Eligibility:

First class in B.Sc. Life Science, B.Sc. Nursing, B.Sc. Nutrition or equivalent.

Job opportunity: This course will enable the successful candidate to be posted as an assistant to a diabetologist in a clinic or hospital specialising in diabetes to assist the physician in clinical tasks and also participate in clinical research.
 
Dialysis Therapy

Dialysis is a mode of treatment needed for patients with severe degree of kidney failure. This procedure uses a machine and an artificial kidney which purifies the blood of patients with kidney failure; in other words, the artificial kidney does the filtering function of the normal kidney. Dialysis unit under the department of Nephrology is run by the services of a team consisting of doctors, social workers, nurses and dialysis therapists/ technologists. Dialysis therapists are involved in the care of patients on dialysis and perform the dual function of patient care and maintenance of dialysis machines.

The course is run by the department of Nephrology, along with assistance from various other departments and specialties.

During the course, the candidates are taught:

  1. The relevant medical aspects of patients with kidney failure.
  2. The technique of dialysis.
  3. Functioning and maintenance of dialysis machines.
  4. Patient care during dialysis.

Candidates undergo practical training in the hospital and would have to stay in the hospital premises. The working hours would be decided by the department. The degree certificate would be issued only after successful completion of internship.

Eligibility:

First class in B.Sc. with Zoology or B.Sc. Allied Health Sciences or B.Sc. Nursing

Job opportunity: This is a job oriented technical training course. Dialysis therapists/ technologists are very much in demand for employment, both in India and abroad.
 
Medical Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the language of biology. The tools for research in all branches of medical science are mainly biochemical in nature. The study of biochemistry is essential to understand basic functions of the body. This study will give information regarding the functioning of cells at the molecular level.

The first year is the foundation course, where the students will be familiarized with the human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. There will be didatic lectures, regular practical and demonstration classes. The second year is devoted with biochemistry theory and practicals. Apart from lecture classes, there will be group discussions, seminars, journal clubs etc. with an introduction to bio-statistics and research methodology. Most of the time will be devoted with the hands-on training in practical classes, starting with the basic biochemical techniques and ending in advanced techniques in molecular biology. The third year will be used for dissertation work as well as for advanced theoretical and technical studies. The students will get an exposure to our high tech biochemistry diagnostic laboratories.

Eligibility: First Class in B.Sc. Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or MLT.

Medical Informatics

Medical Informatics, a novel academic discipline, bridging medicine and information sciences, has already made its presence felt. It may be defined as the art and science of processing medical information. The Institute of Medical Informatics and Multimedia Education (IMIME) at Amrita School of Medicine now offers a two year, four semester M.Sc. course in Medical Informatics, as well as a one year two semester postgraduate diploma in medical informatics (PGDMI). Faculty includes an eclectic blend of clinicians, health informatics, IT specialists and administrators to create an outstanding multi-disciplinary learning environment.

The program aims to train individuals with a background in either biological or non-biological sciences to be effective leaders and participants in the evolving field of medical informatics, which is rapidly gaining prominence in India.

On completion of these programmes, trainees will have adequate knowledge of accessing and processing biomedical and clinical information, basic principles of patient and hospital data base management (expertise in computing, communications, and content). Trainees in the M.Sc. programme will learn how to design a medical database system (coding, classification, and reference models) and statistical analysis of the data, various standardization protocols (including data acquisition and transmission interfaces) and some useful query language. These trainees will also be able to develop web based applications to retrieve information from medical data bases. In addition, they will receive training in planning their own standardized health information systems and e-health services (including strategy,budgeting, procurement and implementation) and building computer-assisted learning applications as well as computerized decision support systems (CDSS).

Eligibility:

Eligible candidates should have at least a Bachelor’s degree in a biological science, physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science or other IT-related field. Medicine or Engineering/IT graduates preferred.

Job opportunities: Successful candidates can find gainful employment in the medical software industry, computerized hospitals, contract research organizations, and the pharmaceutical industry.

In the third year, the students can take part in various other departmental activities such as conduct of cadaveric dissection exercises of various high tech, state of the art clinical procedures for other departments.

Medical Physiology The first year is the foundation course (human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry). At the end of first year, there will be university examination. The students who have satisfactorily completed the foundation course will undergo a further course of four semesters in physiology. During this period, there will be intensive training in the subject through lectures, tutorial classes, discussions, seminars, journal clubs and practical etc with an introduction to bio-statistics and research methodology. Students have to work on a particular allotted topic for dissertation.
Eligibility: First class in Zoolology, MBBS, BDS, BHMS or BAMS can be directly admitted to second year.
Job opportunity: With the coming up of medical, dental and nursing colleges in the self financing sector, there is acute dearth of qualified faculty. The outgoing students, therefore, will have sufficient openings in various medical, dental, nursing and science colleges. There are ample opportunities for research work also.
 
Cardio Vascular Technology The course is designed to train paramedical personnel with core knowledge in clinical cardiovascular medicine and physiology to support clinical cardiovascular procedures, stress testing, electrocardiography, Holter recording, pacemaker analysis, vascular diagnostics, echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, heart failure therapeutic support, rhythm management support, preventive patient counselling and cardiac rehabilitation.
Eligibility: B.Sc. in science subjects, preferably in Physics.
Job opportunity: There are excellent opportunities for the qualified persons. They can find suitable jobs in cardiology units in hospitals, in research organisations, biomedical industry, and as technical specialists in healthcare institutions.
 
Cardiac Perfusion Technology

The course in perfusion technology enables a student to undertake cardiovascular perfusion for a patient undergoing cardiac surgery. The candidate thus trained, is called as a perfusionist who is an integral part of the cardiac surgical team.

The student will learn the intricacies of operating the heart lung machine and other accessory devices that are in routine use in cardiac surgical procedures. The student will acquire a deep insight in to the aspects of congenital, adult and acquired cardiovascular diseases, the surgical corrections for a vast plethora of cardiovascular disorders and specific requirements of cardiovascular perfusion with regards to a relevant clinical situation. Further, the student will also learn the fundamental aspects of critical care of cardiac surgical patients thereby contributing in significant measures to patient care and well being.

Eligibility: B.Sc. In Any Subject, preferably in Physics
Job opportunity: The prospects of successful students are very bright as the demand for well trained and experienced professionals is ever increasing. Cardiac surgical units are coming up in many parts of the country and there is a severe shortage of capable and experienced personnel for the job.
 
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Technology The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences has 22 operation theaters and 135 intensive care beds, the highest number in India and therefore the student will gain exposure to the most modern techniques. During the first 2 years, the student will spend time in the operation theater and intensive care units. During this time, the students will be taught the basics of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, physics, basics of ventilators, basics of monitors and equipment in the hospital. In the operating room, the student will work with monitors and drugs that are used by the doctors during the operation procedures. In the intensive care units, the student is closely associated with the ventilators and is involved with the resuscitation of the critically ill patients. The last six months of the course will be spent in the biomedical gas supply system and in operating the most sophisticated and modern equipment.
Eligibility: B.Sc. in any subject.
Job opportunity: There is great demand for qualified operation theater technologists and intensive care technologists in all major hospitals throughout the world.
 
Neuro Electro Physiology

The course in Neuro-electro-physiology enables the students to assess the patient and plan various electro- diagnostic procedures and implement them. The candidate thus trained, is called as a Neuro-electrophysiology Technologist, who is an integral part of the neurology team.

The student will be able to achieve technical skills needed to conduct various diagnostic procedures and their interpretations as a part of the training. He/she will be trained in the EEG lab, plan montages and do the recording without artifacts and should also be well versed with the technical aspects and preparations of provisional reports. The students get familiarized with semiology of various seizure types, giving first aid in case of emergency and seek timely medical help when needed. In the neuro-physiology lab, they can assist neurologists in Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCV) procedures and get an opportunity for basic interpretation of the findings. Theoretical, technical and basic knowledge of procedures like Visual Evoked Potential (VEP), Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SS EP), Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) will be taught during the course. Further the student will also learn to conduct various clinical and technical tests in the autonomic lab and hands on training in sleep lab, clinical interpretations, sleep staging based of Epworth’s scale and procedure skills in Polysomnography (PSG).

Eligibility: B.Sc. In any Branch of science, preferably Physics

Medical Laboratory Technology In the first year the students will be rotated in Biochemistry, Pathology or Microbiology laboratories. There will be didactic lectures, regular practical and demonstration classes; but emphasis will be on hands-on training in the respective fields. The second year is devoted with specialization in any one of the laboratories (Biochemistry, Pathology or Microbiology). There will be group discussions and seminars with an introduction to biostatistics and research methodology. Most of the time will be devoted to hands-on training in the advanced laboratory techniques, including automated versions. Further there will be a six months internship, where the student will do the dissertation work in his field on interest. Throughout the whole course, students will be in the clinical laboratories. There will be night duties also.

Medical Statistics

The discipline of Biostatistics has contributed substantially to the development of health, medical and biological sciences, and has emerged as an important tool for research. By applying various statistical methodologies a variety of easily applicable diagnosis, treatment and prognosis methods have been developed with scientific validity and many diseases and health conditions have been understood and dealt with appropriately. Statistical methodologies form the strength of any research study so as to make valid judgements and conclusions. Statistical design and analysis methods are very widely used in Clinical Trials, Pharmacology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Basic Sciences, Epidemiological studies, Demography, Quality Control of Medical and Biological equipment, Medical Diagnosis and Prognosis and Health Economics.

Post-graduates in Statistics are not exposed to the applications of statistical methods to medical and health problems and they find it difficult when they join medical colleges or medical research institutes for employment. Hence it becomes essential to provide appropriate professional education in Biostatistics to the candidates interested in pursuing a career in   medical education and research.
