title

The Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery department at AIMS is one of the busiest programs in the country. Over 2000 adult cardiac surgical operations are performed annually. The operations performed include coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair and replacement, and operations for congenital heart defects in adults.

Coronary Artery Surgery Program

Special features of this program include emphasis on total arterial revascularisation and use of minimal access techniques for coronary artery bypass grafting on a beating heart in appropriate patients. The program has acquired reputation for complex coronary artery bypass grafting on high-risk patients with poor heart muscle function and multiple co morbidities.

Valve Replacement and Repair

Valve replacement provides a solution for problems related to heart valves which have become too tight with deposits of calcium (bone) or which leak blood backwards. These problems can be associated with previous rheumatic fever, or may be the result of a valve that was abnormal at birth that has stiffened over time. Valve repair is possible for selected patients.

The valve most commonly repaired is the mitral valve. If the mitral valve is leaking, it can often be repaired by a combination of tailoring the valve leaflets themselves and reducing the size of the valve opening by sewing a ring to the tissue around the valve.

Aortic Surgery

  • Repair of aortic aneurysms
  • Emergency operations for aortic dissection
The aorta is the main blood vessel coming out of the heart carrying blood to the rest of the body. Portions of it can stretch to cause a balloon-like area that can leak or rupture, causing death. These balloon-like dilations, or aneurysms, can develop slowly and silently, or quickly and painfully. An acute dissection, which is a break in a layer of the aorta, causes severe pain and is often mistaken for a heart attack. Parts of the aorta can be replaced with tubes of graft material to reduce the risk of rupture or blockage of blood vessels that can be associated with aneurysms and dissections. Sometimes, this procedure is required as an emergency to prevent imminent rupture and death.

Vascular Surgery

Arterial disorders are very common in Kerala due to the high incidence of diabetes and hypertension. The following operations are routinely performed by the vascular surgeons:
  • Aorto-femoral bypass
  • Femoro-poplitial bypass
  • Pseudo-aneurysm repair
  • Carotid endarterectomy for occlusion of the carotid artery (the main vessel supplying the brain)
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICAS)

The concept that the trauma of access is often worse than that of the surgical correction is widely accepted in various surgical disciplines. The latest extension of this principle has been into the treatment of heart disease, where “minimally invasive” cardiac surgery is currently undergoing rapid progress.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICAS) has been one of the major medical breakthroughs in Cardiac Care. Techniques like video assisted thoracoscopic surgery and endoscopic surgery are here to stay. This procedure on a beating heart or surgery through small incisions or key holes with and without using the heart lung machine is getting widely accepted by our patients.

We have a team which has the knowledge and experience in thoracic surgery. Quality clinical expertise in MICAS with a team of experienced cardiac anaesthetists, facilities for preoperative respiratory assessment like bronchoscopy, and adequate post operative care and instruments specially designed for thoracoscopic surgery is available.

This is the future of cardiovascular surgery which is having more patients undergo MICAS for the following benefits:
  • Reduced incidence of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Less surgical trauma and wounds due to less incision
  • Less medication
  • Less scarring and improved cosmetic cuts
  • Reduced cost of surgery
  • Comparable long term results with respect to conventional procedures
We continue to update ourselves with state-of-the-art technology in our effort to make it available to our patients in the most affordable way.
