Q & A

Background Information on your child :

You will be asked to detail your child’s eating habits, physical activity and sedentary habits which are very important for planning your child’s treatment plan. A mental note of these things ahead of your visit to the clinic will be helpful. A correct recollection of the details will help the team in identifying the underlying lifestyle issues better.

            Blood tests :
Your child will also need to undergo a fasting blood examination. That means no eating or drinking after 11 p.m. the previous night. You will be directed to bring your child fasting to the clinic at 8.30 AM. The blood tests will take 15 to 20 minutes and your child can have his/her breakfast after the blood draw.
Family history of your child :

At the clinic, you will be asked if your child has a family history of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, stroke, high blood pressure and cholesterol abnormalities. Writing down a family history (including parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles) ahead of time is extremely helpful.

            Assessing your child’s lifestyle :

Your child will undergo a detailed physical examination at the clinic. During the examination your child will undergo a body composition analysis, physical activity assessment, dietary assessment and exercise capacity assessment. The examination procedures will last one hour.

Developing a treatment plan for your child :

After a thorough health evaluation, the clinic's team develops a tailor made comprehensive plan for your child based on the causes behind your child's abnormal findings if any (abnormalities in BMI, fasting insulin and glucose levels, lipid profile and blood pressure). The plan includes a weight-loss component that incorporates heart healthy eating and exercise if your child is overweight. In many children, when weight comes down, so does associated abnormalities. In addition to diet and exercise planning, the clinic offers long-term follow-up and routine monitoring of body composition, glucose metabolism, lipid profile, blood pressure and other important health indicators.

            Results from lifestyle interventions :

For optimum results from lifestyle interventions, you and your child need to have a lifetime commitment to healthy eating habits and exercise. The best approach to this plan is to make family-wide changes in eating and exercise. This will make it easier for your child, and there is often more than one member of the family who is at risk for lifestyle diseases and can benefit from making these healthy changes. Changing your family's lifestyle can be a challenging task but with guaranteed results.

You can be confident that the doctors, nurses and nutritionists that you will meet at the clinic specialize in helping parents with the same challenges you face, and will offer solutions that have helped many other young children and teenagers transform from their unhealthy lifestyles to an excellent lifelong healthy lifestyle.
