Microsurgery is a specialization of plastic surgery that deals with the repair and reconstruction of body parts. This has revolutionized surgery and has made possible the rejoining of even very distal parts of fingers.

This field has also made possible the transfer of a dispensable body part to a defective area. Previously the reconstruction of the lower most part of the leg was very difficult often involving multiple staged procedures. This would some times end up in amputation below the knee. Now skin with soft tissue or muscle from the back or the other leg can be taken and used to cover the leg with full healing.

Defects of the head and neck region are most often due to cancer surgery. Trauma or congenital abnormalities are the other reasons. Previously multiple staged procedures that took months to complete were done. With the advent of microsurgery this process has been reduced to 10 -12 days.

Surgery of the peripheral nerves also offers improved results as the use of very high power microscopes lets the doctor suture the nerves with great precision.
