| Open-Heart Surgery for Children Fund |
| In Kerala's population of 30 million people, over 40,000 children have a congenital heart defect. More than 3000 children with heart defects requiring an open-heart operation were seen at AIMS in the first year of operation. |
| The major cost of these surgeries is the disposable items required. Disposable items for a single open-heart surgery is $1350 US. These surgeries are heavily subsidized at AIMS resulting in a cost to the patient that is much lower than in most other hospitals. In spite of this, many parents are still not able to afford the operation. The total cost to the hospital for open-heart surgery including the procedure and the hospital stay is $2500 US. AIMS hopes to provide this surgery free-of-charge for 400 patients who could otherwise not afford treatment.
