Department of Ophthalmology
The Department of Ophthalmology has provided a well-equipped facility for the complete examination, diagnosis, and treatment of all ocular diseases in both adult and paediatric patients since December 1999.

The department is comprised of a dedicated and well-qualified team of health care professionals comprising three senior specialists, two junior doctors, one medical social worker, two Optometrists and other nursing and administrative support staff. Most eye disorders can be diagnosed and treated at AIMS including refractive disorders, cornea and external diseases, uveal diseases, cataract, glaucoma, strabismus and amblyopia, orbital and lid disorders and retinal disorders.

Whether In-patient or Out-patient, optimal care is provided in a timely and friendly manner. The Ophthalmology Department believes in all aspects of patient testing and care as well as comprehensive communication with referring physicians.

Achievements

The Ophthalmology Department has established high standards of clinical practise with diagnosis and management of a wide variety of ocular ailments. In the last three years since the Ophthalmology Department opened at AIMS, more than 3000 eye surgeries have been performed with excellent visual results.

The department regularly conducts free eye camps. More than 50 camps were held in various parts of Kerala from 2000 to 2002. So far this year, 32 camps have already been conducted in various parts of the District up to May 2003. Free Cataract Surgery was done for the patients selected at these camps giving the gift of sight to the poor and needy.

The department hosted an innovative educational conference "New Insights in Ophthalmology with Live Phaco Workshop" in June 2002 that was well attended by ophthalmologists from all over Kerala, as well as faculty from Mumbai and Chennai.
