CASE HISTORIES BEFORE 2001
Adult Cardiac and Vascular Surgery
The Adult Cardiac and Vascular Surgery Programme at AIMS is one of the busiest programmes in the country. Over 1500 cardiac surgical operations are performed annually. The operations performed include coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve reconstruction and replacement, minimally invasive cardiac surgical procedures and complex arch reconstructions..
Coronary Artery Surgery

Special features of this programme include emphasis on total arterial revascularization and use of minimal access techniques for coronary artery bypass grafting on a beating heart. The program has acquired a reputation for coronary artery bypass grafting on high-risk patients with poor heart muscle function..

Valve Replacement and Repair
Valve replacement prevents problems related to heart valves which have become too tight with deposits of calcium (bone) or which leak blood backwards. These problems can be associated with a history of rheumatic fever or may be the result of a valve that was abnormal at birth which has stiffened over time. Valve repair is possible for certain patients. The valve most commonly repaired is the mitral valve. If the mitral valve is leaking, it can often be repaired by a combination of tailoring the valve leaflets themselves and usually reducing the size of the valve opening by sewing a metal ring to the tissue around the valve.
Aortic Surgery (Aneurysm Repair)
The aorta is the main blood vessel coming out of the heart carrying blood to the rest of the body. Portions of it can stretch to cause a balloon-like area that can leak or rupture, causing death. These balloon-like dilations, oraneurysms, can develop slowly and silently or quickly and painfully.

An acute dissection, which is a break in a layer of the aorta, causes severe pain and is often mistaken for a heart attack. Parts of the aorta can be replaced with tubes of Dacron graft material to reduce the risk of rupture or blockage of blood vessels that can be associated with aneurysms and dissections. Sometimes, this is required as an emergency to prevent imminent rupture and death.

Vascular Surgery
Arterial disorders are very common in Kerala due to various factors such as a higher incidence of diabetes and hypertension. AIMS diagnostic services include: MR Angio, Spiral CT with 3D reconstruction, conventional angiography, Digital Subtraction Angiography(DSA) and Doppler study.

The following surgeries are routinely performed:

Repair of aortic aneurysms

Emergency operations for aortic dissection

Aorto-femoral bypass

Femoro-poplitial bypass

Pseudo-aneurysm repair

Carotid endarterectomy for occlusion of the carotid artery (the main vessel supplying the brain)
